The Hands Behind the Clay
1-tea was built around five pairs of hands.
Three master potters. Each with over a decade of experience at the wheel. They do not operate machines. They sit at a kick-wheel, center a lump of raw clay, and pull it into form with nothing but water, pressure, and instinct. Every teacup, every pitcher that leaves our studio was shaped by these three artisans — not by a mold, not by a production line.
Two painters. Trained in underglaze technique, the most unforgiving form of ceramic decoration. There is no erasing. The pigment sinks into the raw clay body before the first firing. A single misplaced stroke cannot be undone. Our painters work with this pressure every day — painting peaches, kapok blossoms, swallows in flight, bamboo groves, pandas, rabbits, gold-leaf stars, and indigo storms — knowing that each mark is permanent.
Together, the five of them produce fewer pieces in a month than a factory produces in an afternoon. That is the point.
The Process
Every 1-tea piece passes through four stages. No stage is automated.
Throwing. Raw clay is centered and pulled by hand on the wheel. The potter shapes the foot, the body, the rim — decisions made in seconds that define the silhouette for decades.
Trimming. After the first drying, excess clay is carved away. The foot ring is refined. The walls are thinned from within. This is where weight leaves the piece — and where our signature "light and thin, won't burn your hand" flared rim is born.
Painting. Our painters apply pigments to the leather-hard clay body using fine brushes and underglaze pigments. There is no stencil. No transfer sheet. Every peach on a lid, every swallow on a cup, every gold-leaf fleck is placed by hand. The result is never identical. It is always true.
Firing. The kiln reaches 1,260°C — a temperature that vitrifies the clay into stone, that fuses the pigment into the glaze, that turns fragile greenware into something you can hold for a lifetime. Each piece shrinks roughly 14% in the fire. The potter and painter both know this — they compensate in advance with experience that no machine can replicate.
The Design Philosophy
1-tea does not chase trends. We build around four principles that govern every piece we make.
First — the hand must come first. A flared rim is not decorative. It is designed so your fingers never touch the hot body of the cup when you pour. A narrow foot is not an aesthetic choice. It creates the right center of gravity for a cup you hold without a handle. Every shape decision starts with how a human hand will interact with it.
Second — the clay must speak. We developed a proprietary clay body recipe — a balanced blend of fine ceramic clay — that yields a matte, unglazed exterior with a silky, almost soft-to-the-touch finish. Our palette is drawn from the earth: cream, sage, rust, bone, ink, blush. Nothing shouts. Everything whispers.
Third — the painting must move. Look closely at a 1-tea peach. The fruit is not a solid shape — it is a wash of blush pink bleeding into pale green, scattered with gold specks that shift in the light. Look at our indigo storm series: the blue is not applied evenly. It is brushed in broad, expressive strokes that follow the wheel-throw lines. Our swallows are painted mid-flight for a reason. Static is not our language.
Fourth — imperfection is the signature. No two 1-tea pieces are identical. The gold leaf on one peach sits a millimeter left of the last. The glaze on one indigo cup runs a shade darker. The wavy rim on one cup dips where the potter's finger paused. We do not correct these things. We sign them. This is what "handmade" actually means — and we refuse to dilute it.
